Seems I’ve been tagged by my new friend, JJ Cooper. And because he’s a new friend, I’m inclined to indulge him….
He wants to know my favorite line. Hm. Books? Film? Pick-up? Since we both write novels, I’ll go with books.
My very favorite is a no-brainer: “Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again.” It’s the opening of Du Maurier’s gothic novel, REBECCA. There are few better set-ups in literature. Those words immediately draw me into the story and make me curious: The story is told in first person and the voice is wistful. But whose voice is it? It sounds like a woman’s voice. She’s a woman who dreams. She knows this place–Manderly. Manderly is an uncommon, romantic name. The woman is no longer there–but why not? What happened?
But a close second favorite has to be this: “So. The Spear-Danes in days gone by and the kings who ruled them had courage and greatness. We have heard of those princes’ heroic campaigns.” What an invitation to adventure! Bonus points if you can guess what it is. (No fair Googling!)
PS–Thanks for the lovely birthday wishes!
Yeah, I googled, so won’t post here. Never in a gazillion years would have guessed on my own and I had to know.
Very cool!
